In order to diagnose acne, it is not necessary to use a medical test. In fact, a visual examination is sufficient to tell that a person is suffering from acne. Although it is easy to recognize an acne problem, the problem is that people sometimes over-react to the issue. You are not having a full-blown case of acne simply just because you have a pimple or a zit.

If you are only having a mild case of acne, you can easily get it treated by purchasing acne medications over the counter at most of the drug stores, discount departments, grocery stores or even online. The advantage of buying your acne medications via online sites is that you do not even have to leave your house to get. You can also get herbal acne remedies from health food stores or herbal shops. All these home remedies are good for treating mild acne problems so you can save the hassle of queuing up to see a doctor.

On the other hand, if you know that your acne problem cannot be considered as mild, maybe because you have more than a few pimples or they have lasted for long periods and refused to go away, then it is time you see a dermatologist. If your problem is too serious, the normal over the counter medications might not work for your stubborn pimples. You will be better able to cure your acne problem by seeing a dermatologist as some medications are only available by prescriptions.

More often than not, this mild acne will be able to heal by itself over time and as you grow past your teenage stage. Most acne sufferers will find that they have ‘outgrown’ such acne problems by the time they reach their early 20s as they are no longer teenagers. Once you’ve outgrown your teenage stage, the hormonal imbalance would have stopped and your body would not have to react against it with acne outbreaks.

However, one problem that can arise from teenage acne is the scars that might have been left behind. Severe cases of acne problem can give rise to ugly scars which is why for those of you who are suffering from severe acne problems really need to consult a dermatologist as soon as possible.

Nevertheless, if you are suffering from acne scars left behind by serious acne problems, do not despair. Once you have that stubborn acne treated, you can actually go for laser or other treatments to have those acne scars removed.
